Calculating Variable Units

Contract Unit
  • A contract is a 2.5 megawatt (Mw) per hour block (monthly, weekly, daily).
  • Variable Contract Unit (monthly)
    • Contract quantity is determined by multiplying the delivery rate (2.5 Mw) by the number of peak hours (16) in a day and by the number of peak days in the contract period.
      • 19 peak days - 760 Mwh/lot
      • 20 peak days – 800 Mwh/lot
      • 21 peak days – 840 Mwh/lot
      • 22 peak days – 880 Mwh/lot
      • 23 peak days – 920 Mwh/lot
  • A 50 Mw deal is 20 PJM futures contracts.
Example: June 2003 (JMM3):
Delivery Rate (Mw) x Peak Hours in Day x Peak Days in Period = Contract Unit
Or
2.5 Mw x 16 hours x 21 days = 840 Mwh
